Tale of Two Innings

9 08 2010

During Sri Lanka’s 2nd innings in the third test match vs India, SL found themselves in deep trouble at 125 for 8. With an overall lead of just 114 runs, it was going to be only a matter of time before India took the remaining two wickets and knocked off the runs for a series leveling win. But as they say, “That’s why they play the game”. Thilan Samaraweera, the lone remaining established batsman got together with Ajantha Mendis and put on 118 runs for the ninth wicket to give SL a real shot at the win.

With India struggling at 52 for the loss of three top order wickets, and another 200 odd runs to get on a turning fifth day wicket in the P Saravanamuttu Oval, it looked like India’s reign at the top of the test table was going to be short lived. Enter VVS Laxman, who scored a magnificent  unbeaten 103 to shepherd India home and draw the series 1-1.
